Dining off the beaten path in Modena

Food tours have started to blast off in Italy and Modena has a big role in it. The city has plenty of good restaurants, some in the centre, few off the touristic area but still offering authenticity and genuineness and the Trattoria L’Antica Grama in Modena is certainly one of those.

LOCATION AND CONTACTS: Via Vignolese, 765, Modena.  Phone: 0039- 059 36 41 176  Facebook Fans Page: @AnticaGramaTrattoria

This tiny restaurant is situated in via Vignolese, less than 2 km out the heart of a small town called Modena. It is the favourite hangout place for locals who want to taste genuine homemade food and excellent regional wine off from the city centre of Modena. Trattoria L’Antica Grama is owned by a middle-aged charming woman, who always has been passionate about cooking and from the year 2011, she is running this restaurant in Modena together with her family. The restaurant exterior is poorly illuminated and not clearly signposted but as you enter the place, you feel welcomed by a small dining hall which can seat around 42 people.

The menu offers a wide variety of mouth-watering items. From starters to desserts everything is linked to the Modenese cuisine. We often go there and we have almost tried all of their dishes. They are just exquisite.

fresh homemade pasta

All the products they use are fresh and the dishes have the warmth of home-made food. The owner takes great care in selecting the best quality ingredients. The restaurant also caters for all tastes by providing a large selection of the best wines of the region, which are pricy but worth sampling. Even the pasta is fresh and it is made right away after the order. There is one more reason why I’m here today to share this amazing place with you. Alessandro has been medically cow’s milk free for over five years now (actually he can eat butter and parmesan cheese because they don’t contain milk-protein), which means that he has some restrictions when in the restaurants. Eating milk free in Modena is still a big challenge since plenty of local dishes include dairy products. The Trattoria L’Antica Grama, on the contrary,  offers wide milk free items and most of the times they use non-dairy creamer which makes the food light and less oily. For this reason, we are tempted to visit this place at least once a month.

Two more pros which you must not underestimate are certainly the huge front parking and the English written menu card. When it comes to Modena, it is a big step ahead!!! Prices are a bit above average but however, let me say that the service and the food justified it.

There is nothing to complain about the service. It does accompany the high quality of the cooking. The owner is always around willing to exchange some kind words with all her clients. We always have a pleasant dining experience with food of the most exquisite flavours.
Modena today has become famous for the “Festival della Filosofia”, for “Motors and Cars”, for “art collections”, for its amazing “cathedral” and much more; plenty of tourists are now visiting the city and most of them dine in the city centre. I just want to remember you guys that finding the best food off the beaten path can be really tricky. If you happen to be in Modena and looking for good Modenese cuisine, I highly recommend the Trattoria L’Antica Grama, it is one of the best places to eat in Modena.

If you are a tourist in Italy you are not probably going to face a dining disaster nevertheless since gastronomy is an essential part of the travel experience, a piece of advice from a local who has grown up with Modenese food could really help you choose the right restaurant. Remember that reservations here are mandatory (tel: +39 059 364176)! The trattoria remains closed on Tuesday and at lunch on Saturday.

Family restaurants are nice to visit because they certainly value family legacy. For the millennial to manage it, they may input modern day conveniences but definitely, they will respect family tradition.

It seems like it’s a family vibe setting not so big and over crowded. The price point I can deal with if the food is extra fabulous.
