Casa Loma

Along with the CN
Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, Replay’s Aquarium and Ontario Science Centre, Casa
Loma was one of the included attractions of Toronto City pass which we have
previously bought online for € 65.00 each. We were travelling with our rented
car and the parking was available just by the entrance for $ 10.00. Only once
at the spot we could realize that having gone for the city pass option have
saved us a lot of money because the entrance ticket was quite expensive: $
30.00.

Casa Loma

Upon arrivals we received
a ground plan and a multi-language audio guide which in our opinion was well
done but on the other side could be boring for children because it was a little
long on details. Casa Loma was a Gothic Revival Style Castle (between 1911 and
1914) with its five acres garden in midtown Toronto. It was designed by J.
Lennox for Sir Henry Pellet financier as his residential abode.

Casa Loma

Due to its unique
architectural character in Toronto, Casa Loma remained an important landmark
and has been a popular filming location for movies (X-Man) and television. It
was also popular for wedding ceremonies and private parties. The history behind
Casa Loma was interesting and touching. Sir Henry Pellet, because of his financial lost,
could enjoy his Castle life for less than 10 years. After that, in the late
1920s, investors operated Casa Loma as a luxury hotel. The city seized Casa
Loma in 1924 for unpaid taxes, and for years, the building was left empty and
abandoned. In the 1930s, broadcaster Claire Wallace while spending a night at
Casa Loma to gather material for a story about ghosts and supernatural phenomena
realized that it was a shame leaving it ruin and she later broadcasted an
appeal to save the old building from demolition. Her voice was heard by the
vice-president of a local Kiwanis Club, who later began operating the castle as
a tourist destination. From there to now the Castle underwent to management
changes and renews which day by day have upgraded and became an important
landmark of the country.  Out of the
history the audio guide explained also the details on various rooms and
barracks. We were impressed to hear that out of the 200 phones in Toronto, the
castle had 50 of them: they did not look at the expenses!!! We spent almost
four hours in Casa Loma Castle and sincerely worth the visit even if it doesn’t
represent among the most beautiful ones we have seen: being European that didn’t
really compare. Even though it was important to understand, at least in part,
the history of Canada and specially it was interesting to see what was
considered the Canadian style just over 1000 years ago.

Casa Loma

As we were travelling with our rented car it
took a while before finding a parking solution out of Casa Loma. Probably it
would have been better using the subway (DuPont Station). Not only because it
was cheap but because it gave a faster access to the city in case wanting to
stay in town after the visit. The Halloween party at Casa Loma was said to be winning,
so try to frame your visit accordingly if you are around the area during that
period.
An inconvenience could happen if you find yourself
visiting the Castle during the private ceremonies because many rooms, will be
closed for “public” and also the parking could be full that you have to go
around and around to find a place where leaving the car. We highly recommend
you guys to make sure about this issue if you want to capture the entire charm
of Casa Loma.
